Where is Calpe?

Calpe, or Calp in Valencian, its official name, is a coastal town in the province of Alicante, Valencian Community, Spain, located in the area known as Costa Blanca Norte, in the region of Marina Alta.


It borders to the north and inland with Benisa and to the south with Altea. It is located at a distance of just over 20 kilometers north of Benidorm and 60 from Alicante Capital.


Calpe has 23,000 inhabitants in an area of 23km2 and has 13 kilometers of coastline where, in addition to beaches and coves, stands the imposing Peñón de Ifach, a rock massif that is an icon of the city.

Among other public facilities, Calpe has the Domingo Crespo Municipal Pavilion, with a court for handball, basketball and indoor soccer; the Ifac Sports Pavilion with a court for basketball, indoor soccer and volleyball and the Fernando Delgado Municipal Swimming Pool, open for swimming, matron swimming, aquafitness or water polo.


The municipality of Calpe does not have any golf course but there are other golf clubs nearby in the vicinity. The closest ones are: Club de Golf Ifach (6 km.), Altea Club de Golf (7 km.), Club de Golf Jávea (14 km.) and La Sella Golf (18 km.).

In addition, its good temperature, with a climate of mild temperatures in winter and 360 days of sunshine, make it possible to enjoy the outdoors in almost any season.


The minimum temperature is around 16°C in February, and the maximum is 28°C in August. The sea water temperature in Calpe ranges from 14°C in winter to 26°C in summer and, as in the whole Costa Blanca, you can also enjoy more than 300 days of sunshine a year.

Calp has 13 kilometers of coastline where you have a wide range of beaches and coves where you can enjoy the sun and the Mediterranean Sea.

The most popular beaches are those located in the town center such as Playa del Arenal-Bol and La Playa de Levante or La Fossa. These are beaches of fine sand and calm waters next to the promenade, with all the services and bathing service adapted for people with reduced mobility, ideal for families.

Another urban beach of fine sand is Cala del Morelló, where the archaeological remains known as Baños de la Reina (Queen's Baths) are located. To the north of La Fossa Beach is also the small and quiet Cala Calaga, with sand and rounded stones.

Visit the Cala La Manzanera, located next to the curious and colorful building known as the Red Wall designed by the famous architect Ricardo Bofil in the 70s, or Cantal Roig Beach, blue flag and next to the port, with calm waters ideal for the whole family.

Under the Peñón de Ifach and at the beginning of the Princesa de Asturias promenade, is the Cala El Racó, very frequented by divers because, in addition to its crystal clear waters, has the only underwater trail in the Valencian Community marked with information panels.

In the northern part you will find Cala del Mallorquí and Cala Les Bassetes, with coarse sand, pebbles or rock platform.

If you prefer virgin and hidden coves, surrounded by nature, you have the Cala del Penyal, of naturist character, which is accessible on foot from the northern part of the rock, and others that are only accessible by sea as the Cala El Collao or Racó del Corb, the Cala Gasparet, gravel and rock and recommended for diving and fishing.

Peñon de Ifach

If anything characterizes the city of Calpe is the Peñón de Ifach, a rocky massif that rises more than 300 meters from the sea and has a kilometer long.

This imposing mass of rock is protected as a Natural Park and was formed after detaching from the Sierra de Oltà located inland.

It can be crossed through a path of about 5 kilometers that reaches the top accompanying the cormorants and seagulls that inhabit its walls.

In addition to the Rock, in Calpe you can enjoy the nature that surrounds the city. On the one hand you have the huge lagoon of the Salinas de Calpe, which extends 41 hectares in the town center and where you can see the storks and the colorful pink flamingos that feed in its waters.

Another highly recommended route is the Benissa-Calp Ecological Walk, which runs along the coastline on a route of about 5 kilometers between cliffs and coves and where hiking with privileged views of the sea, easy access and suitable to go with the family.

On the other hand, you can go through the Sierra de Oltà, with ten kilometers of mountain to walk along its trails or take the route to the Mirador del Morro de Toix, located next to the coast and from where you can enjoy the landscape of sea and mountain with the bay of Calpe and the Natural Park of Montgó.

Cultural heritage

Calpe has an attractive cultural and archaeological heritage in which stand out:

  • Torre del Castellet (16th century). You can see the remains of a watchtower, whose purpose was to prevent attacks by Barbary pirates.

  • Casa Nova (18th century). This fortified farmhouse is on top of a hill, in order to visit the surrounding country houses.

  • Ricardo Bofill Buildings (20th century). These are 3 buildings by the Catalan architect Ricardo Bofill: Xanadú (1968), La Muralla Roja (1972) and El Anfiteatro (1985).

Among the museums of Calpe are the following:

  • Archaeological Museum of Calpe. Among its collection exhibits pieces from the Iberian period to the Middle Ages. It includes archaeological remains from the Roman sites of Baños de la Reina and other areas such as the Peñón de Ifach and Tossal de Consentari.

  • Casa de la Senyoreta Museum. Here you can see pictorial works of the municipal artistic heritage in an eighteenth century building that was a manor house.

  • Ethnological Museum Casa del Cocó. Located in a typical rural building of the Marina Alta. It allows visitors to discover the economic activities that took place in Calpe in the past. Activities such as winemaking, fishing or agriculture.

The festive calendar of Calpe extends throughout the year, highlighting the following festivities and celebrations:

  • March. Fallas. In the month of March the Commission of the "Falla del Calp Vell" plants a falla composed of large sculptures of cardboard, wood and other materials that represent public figures and reproduce scenes of everyday life with ironic messages. This falla burns at midnight on March 19.

  • August. Patron saint festivities in honor of the Virgen de las Nieves. Every year, on August 5, since 1940 the inhabitants and visitors of Calpe celebrate their patron saint.

  • September. Pilgrimage of the Virgen del Rocío. In September the Casa de Andalucía in Calpe organizes a pilgrimage from the hermitage of San Salvador to the hermitage of San Juan, patron saint of La Cometa.

  • October. Patron saint and Moors and Christians festivities in honor of the Santísimo Cristo del Sudor. In the month of October, religious and festive events are held that combine majesty with devotion.

How to get to Calpe / Calp?

By road

Calpe is connected to the rest of the Mediterranean cities by the AP-7 highway, exit 63 or 64, as well as by the national highway N-332. It is located about 63 kilometers from Alicante city.

Flights to Calpe. By plane

The nearest airports are: Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport, located about 50 minutes to the south and Valencia Airport, 1h 20min. to the north, both with a wide range of national and international flights.

By sea

If you come by boat, you have the Real Club Náutico Calpe Marina and the Club Náutico Les Bassetes with about 400 moorings between them for boats up to 18 meters in length and will be added to the offer the Marina Port Blanc with about 200 additional moorings.

By bus

Several buses leave from Alicante every day to the Calpe Bus Station. There are also regular lines from neighboring cities and from Valencia, Madrid or Barcelona, among others. Check the routes in the company Alsa.

By streetcar

Calpe connects with the coastal towns of the Costa Blanca North with the Alicante TRAM, which runs from Alicante to Denia. The Calp stop is on Line 9.


The nearest train station is the RENFE train station in Alicante. From there, there are city buses that connect with the Alicante Bus Station.
